Luxembourg Income Study

The international research project LIS offers two data collection series for international comparative research: a collection of household income surveys (LIS) and the Luxembourg Employment Study (LES). Both series provide harmonised and standardised micro data from different countries.

The LIS database is a collection of household income surveys. So far, data has been collected in five waves (from 1980 to 2000), with 29 participant countries. The data enable comparative research on income distribution and the impact of income transfers in different countries.

The LES database includes Labour Force Surveys from 20 countries. Data have been collected in three waves: 1990, 1995 and 2000. The surveys provide detailed information on job search, employment characteristics, occupations, investment in education, migration, etc.

The datasets can be accessed via the Internet mailing system by submitting SAS, SPSS or STATA programs.

CSES - International Election Data

The Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES) is a collaborative program of cross-national research, including election studies conducted in over fifty states. CSES data enable analysis of changes in citizens' political participation over time. The first data collection was carried out in 1996-2001. At present, the second wave collection in under way (years 2001-2005). The third wave is planned for 2006-2010.

The data are administered by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbour (US). Researchers from various countries collaborate in designing the questionnaire and themes for each round. In addition to surveys, there is information on political parties, electoral systems and political issues in each participating country. CSES data are available free of charge on the project Web site, requiring registration only.

Finland joined CSES last year under the leadership of Lauri Karvonen (Åbo Akademi) and Heikki Paloheimo (University of Tampere). Data collection in 2003 was funded by the Ministry of Education, mainly through the grant allocated to FSD for the collection of comparative data.

MOTV Expands to Include Qualitative Methods

FSD has launched a project to expand the Research Methods Web Resource (MOTV). A new MOTV Web site will focus on qualitative methods, containing information on qualitative approach and analysis models.

Web page content will be created by Professor Jari Eskola and social scientists Anna Puusniekka and Anita Saaranen, all from the University of Kuopio. FSD will be responsible for the technical implementation and maintenance.

The goal is to create an open access learning environment which will benefit students and teachers both in universities and polytechnics. No registration or special software will be required, and content can be viewed with a standard browser.

The learning environment will be based on hypertext design. The structure will allow easy navigation between various levels, from primary information to more profound information on a subject. In addition to methodology introductions and analysis examples, the site will contain qualitative data with which people can exercise making analyses.

The first version of the learning environment, in Finnish, will be published in the spring of 2005.
