Workshop II: Technical Data Security

The workshop will start with a presentation on data viruses. Paper on this presentation will be available at the CES2000 website soon after the seminar. Workshop participants are recommended to give a presentation with a written summary / paper of their archives' current practices and questions concerning especially technical data security. Presentations may cover issues listed below or some other topics related to data security.

Technical data security in the data archiving process:

  • checking incoming data sets from the point of view of technical data security
  • temporary preservation of data sets / working files
  • how to secure a safe dissemination of data
  • where and how actual data sets are stored, who has access to what and how do you control it
  • what software is used in each step
  • how has your archive organised backups and their storing
  • special arrangements for confidential materials
  • how to organise a reliable long term preservation

Other Topics:

  • plans to recover from possible disasters
  • experiences on recoveries
  • protection against email viruses: do you have standard operating procedures concerning attachments; how do you inform about your procedures to people contacting you
  • securing your computing environment: what technical methods (e.g. firewalls) do you use against possible hackers and who manages them
